Boston University’s Yawkey Nonprofit Internship Program is a selective program designed for sophomores and juniors that provides funding to support participation in unpaid internships at nonprofit organizations. From Summer 2022, this organization has extended funding to remote internships as well.

About Yawkey Foundation

The Yawkey Foundation is a charitable, grant-making organization focused on supporting children, families, and the underserved. The Yawkey Foundation’s gift to Boston University is the first permanent fund supporting student internships at Boston University and provides funding for unpaid internships at nonprofit organizations. The Foundation provides funding to nonprofit organizations. Working closely with nonprofits to help them achieve their goals, the Foundation recognizes the importance of nonprofits in the communities and the need for individuals who are passionate about contributing to these worthwhile causes. 


The Yawkey Foundation has awarded more than $500 million in grants to nonprofit organizations serving the people of Massachusetts and Georgetown, South Carolina since 1977.


Eligibility Criteria for Yawkey Nonprofit Internship 

Yawkey Nonprofit Internship Program is designed to enable students to gain valuable experience in the nonprofit field while also providing them with the critical financial support that these organizations are often unable to provide due to limited budgets.

Admission Requirements

  • Have sophomore or junior standing at the time of a fall or spring semester internship; summer funding is available to students who have sophomore or junior standing during the preceding spring semester.
  • Every applicant should have a 2.0 or higher GPA in their respective field and segment of studies.
  • Secure a qualified, unpaid internship at a nonprofit organization.
  • Have not previously received funding from the Yawkey Nonprofit Internship Program or the Santander Internship Program.
  • Be enrolled full-time students at Boston University. For fall or spring semester internships, participants must be enrolled that semester. For summer internships, participants must be enrolled for both the preceding spring and the following fall semesters.
  • Remain in good disciplinary standing during their program participation.
  • A demonstrated commitment to community service is preferred(not compulsory).

International students who meet program requirements are welcome to apply. Since this award is a non-service-based scholarship, international students are not required to obtain U.S. off-campus employment authorization to participate.


Yawkey Foundation Internship Roles/Positions

  • Meet with your supervisor at the start of your internship to discuss your learning agreement, how you will be supervised during the internship, and how your work will be evaluated.
  • Complete the learning agreement with your internship supervisor. Submit it by the end of the second week.
  • Behave professionally, following the signed code of conduct
  • Engage with cohort by sharing an article on the Yawkey Nonprofit Internship Program Facebook group
  • Meet with your supervisor at the end of your internship to evaluate your work and discuss your progress toward identified learning objectives


Yawkey Foundation Internship Salary 

Yawkey Foundation offers a quite considerable amount for the interns. Applicants for funding must already have secured a qualified internship. Interns get a stipend of $2,000 for fall or spring semester internships and $4,000 for summer internships.
